==============================
Originally founded in 1972 by Discos Fuentes record label vice-president José María Fuentes and historic producer and band leader Julio E. Estrada, aka Fruko, Afrosound was Colombia’s answer to the emerging African and Latin rock sounds coming from Africa (Osibisa) and North America (Santana) of that era.
The original mission was to emulate the guitar-heavy psychedelic-tropical sounds emanating from the chica music movements of Perú and Ecuador at that time. Fuentes and Fruko saw the popularity of this new type of hybrid Cumbia sound and thus created a Discos Fuentes studio super group to compose and record what are now classics of the psychedelic-cumbia repertoire.
For those classic hits produced by Fruko, Afrosound not only incorporated the Andean guitar-laden sound, but mixed in funk, salsa, son, tropical, disco, and Afro-Colombian rhythms as well. The result being Cumbia party albums that, from start to finish, have defined generations of Colombian music.
Now with over 50 years history under their belt, the current incantation of Afrosound’s historic ensemble are continuing to preserve and expand this music’s global reach.
A festival and theater favorite at home in Colombia and throughout South America, the ensemble recently had a successful 2024-2025 European tour and is now planning on touring North America in the 2026/2027 season.
