Tribu Baharu

Tribu Baharu (Colombia):

Originally founded in Isla Baharu off of Cartegena, Colombia's Atlantic Coast, Tribu Baharu are now based in Bogota and considered to be Colombia's foremost "Champeta Champions" and, as cultural ambassadors, they have taken this sound from Cartegena and Barranquila to festival and theater stages the world over.

Over recent years, the group has earned there place as the modern day superheroes of the Afro-descendent folk genre called champeta - a sonic gumbo derived from African soukous, highlife, Soweto jive and mixed with Caribbean rythyms like Haitian kompa, calypso and Colombian Latin genres like cumbia.   Champeta is the sound of Afro-Latin pride, freedom and resilience.

In North America the ensemble has left a lasting impression at many profile events - including the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Carnegie Hall Citywide, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Montana Folk Festival, Lowell Folk Festival, Richmond Folk Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival and many others.

In addition to there own presentations, the group's core founding members are the key Colombian rythym foundation of the All-Star Afro-Colombian ensemble the Champe-Soukous Collective - whose debut recording is set to be released in early 2026.
