BLACK CARL, Phoenix-based group defines their sound as "desert soul," beat-driven and meaningful. Their unique sound derives influence from the likes of Bill Withers, The Meters, Erykah Badu and Thievery Corporation.
BLACK CARL has released a self-titled EP (Black Carl 2007), 2 full length Records (Borrowed 2009, The Wheel 2013), as well as a series of 45s which were part of a membership-based subscription (The Black Carl Record Club 2011), all of which were released independently.
“Singer Emma Pew brings a soulful, sultry wail to the clanging, funk-fueled indie rock of Black Carl… You can hear a bit of Motown and Sly Stone in the grooves…. The lyrics are searching, spiritual and touched with despair accompanied by explosive blasts of guitar and beats echoing into the dry desert air.” – Bands to Watch - Rolling Stone
“This is soul – and all the sex and theatrical angst and hazy black-and-white establishing shots that come with it – for people whose internal Aretha Franklin is mediated by sarcasm and sharp glances” – Phoenix New Times
